stretch marks a characteristic form of scarring that is generally associated with pregnancy, obesity, bodybuilding and puberty. When the skin is overstretched and the normal production of collagen is disrupted then the results are stretch marks. They are normally a reddish or purple color when they first appear on the skin , as time goes by they begin to fade and become a lot lighter, almost white in color. Stretch marks have an empty feeling to the touch and are very soft.

The name is unappealing and the effect on the skin is not much better. Stretch marks occur when the fibres under the epidermis layer of skin are damaged, causing the skin to lose its elasticity.
This commonly happens during pregnancy, puberty or as a result of sudden weight gain, all of which can stretch the epidermis. The result is a series of small bluish-purple lines on the skin that later turn white

The human skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis or outer layer, the dermis which is the middle layer and the subcutaneous stratum being the innermost layer. Stretch marks occur in the dermis and it is this layer that helps the skin to retain its rigidity and form. As the dermis stretches and stretched over a certain period of time it begins to lose its elasticity making the connective fibers to break resulting in what we know as simple stretch marks.

Stretch marks can appear almost any where on the body, but are most likely to appear where fat is stored. The most common places are the abdomen (especially near the belly button area and usually after pregnancy), breasts, upper arms, underarms, thighs and buttocks. They are of no health risk at all and do not in any way compromise the body’s ability to function normally. They are however often the cause of a negative self esteem and physical self consciousness.
