Stretch marks : Avoid and reduce them

The name is unappealing and the effect on the skin is not much better. Stretch marks occur when the fibres under the epidermis layer of skin are damaged, causing the skin to lose its elasticity.

This commonly happens during pregnancy, puberty or as a result of sudden weight gain, all of which can stretch the epidermis. The result is a series of small bluish-purple lines on the skin that later turn white. The areas most commonly affected are where the skin is most sensitive, i.e. the stomach, the breasts, the hips, the buttocks, and the thighs.

While certain people are more likely than others to develop Stretch marks, preventing their development is a question of common sense : You should avoid drastic weight gain and promote the elasticity of the skin.

Rosehip oil, truly your skin's best friend, is particularly recommended - massage it onto the skin at night and feel how the skin becomes hydrated and supple, gaining elasticity to encompass any temporary weight gains. From the first application you'll feel the light tingling in the skin - the indication of significant tension within the epidermis - relax, and the skin soften. In the case of pregnancy we strongly recommend that you compliment the effect of the Rosehip oil by applying Australis, our anti-stretch mark cream. Massage it daily into the affected areas of skin from the first months of your pregnancy.

You can further increase the effect by regularly using one of the soaps made with Rosehip oil, also available in our range. If, despite all your careful attention your skin shows the tell-tale bluish-purple lines, you can still dramatically reduce the effect by the application of the Rosehip oil. The result is impressive, even on operation scars, which tells you how effective it is on the much less serious epidermal trauma that are Stretch marks.

Another word of wisdom: Treat Stretch marks as you would new scars. Don't expose them to direct sunlight for at least a year, or until the lines have turned white. If sun-exposure is unavoidable, protect the Stretch marks with a high factor sunblock cream.
